Visual Narrative inspired from my visit to Vengurla, Maharashtra
During my first-year college study tour to Vengurla (coastal Maharashtra), we had stayed at a homestay owned by Shweta Hule. She's a force in Vengurla, doing amazing work, especially for the mangroves. Living there, I delved into the fishermen community, feeling their connection to nature—sea, mangroves, fish- and boats. The ladies, while going about their day, sang the famous Marathi folk song, 'Mi Dolkar Daryacha Raja'. This familiar tune became the heartbeat of my visual narrative- bridging illustrations, concept, and song to capture the true vibe of Vengurla. I believe it to be a genuine reflection of the place's soul, portraying the harmony between the community and the elements that shape their world.
Setting:
Set in the picturesque Vengurla, Maharashtra, the story unfolds along the Konkan coast, celebrated for its mangroves, community vibrancy, and profound connection to nature.
Characters:
Riya: A 19-year-old from Pune, on a summer vacation at her grandparents' village.
Aaji (Grandmother): A strong, independent leader of a women's savings group.
Lata: A companion on the boat ride, connected to Aaji and Riya.
Riya joins Aaji and Lata for a serene boat ride along the Konkan river, surrounded by lush mangroves. The enchanting tunes of the folk song weave through the air, emphasizing the deep connection between people and nature.
Aaji's respected presence shines as she warmly interacts with fellow villagers, showcasing her standing in the community. Riya observes the vibrant river life, where birds and fish thrive under the protection of the mangroves.
The folk song takes on poignant meaning, reflecting the community's mix of anxiety and hope as they work to bring Lata's husband home safely. The story concludes with uncertainty hanging in the air, capturing the essence of human existence in harmony with nature in Vengurla, as they face the impending storm.
